How does hydroponics work?

You may have heard that plants need soil to grow.

Technically speaking… they don't.

That's the idea behind hydroponics—and behind our smart planters, which make this growing method surprisingly simple.

It might sound a bit like magic. In reality, we've simply taken the principles of biology and turned them into a system that does the hard work for you.

How Oliver works

Getting started is almost suspiciously easy.

Your seeds arrive pre-planted in ready-to-use capsules. Each capsule contains everything a plant needs for its entire life cycle—typically up to six months of growth. No mixing nutrients. No measuring. We've already taken care of it.

Each capsule is fitted with wicks and placed into your water-filled Oliver planter. That's where the "invisible" part begins:

  • the wicks gradually draw water from Oliver to the seeds
  • the seeds have constant access to both moisture and nutrients
  • once the plant is strong enough, its roots grow down and start taking up water on their own

No sudden changes. No stress for the plant. Just a smooth transition that follows nature's rhythm—with a little more precision.

From there, Oliver:

  • maintains a stable growing environment
  • provides consistent watering
  • minimizes fluctuations that could slow down growth
And your job?

Simply insert the capsule and top up the water whenever needed.

A smart system that takes care of the details

Hydroponics is often seen as something highly technical.

And it can be—if you're building the system yourself.

We chose a different approach.

Oliver is designed to:

  • work reliably without constant supervision
  • automatically maintain ideal growing conditions
  • eliminate the small details that often cause growing problems

You don't need to know how many nutrients your plant needs today. You don't need to wonder when the roots will start developing.

The system knows—and takes care of it for you.

The benefits of hydroponics (when it's done right)

  • faster plant growth
  • lower water consumption
  • fewer soil-borne pests
  • the freedom to grow almost anywhere—even in spaces without natural light

And with Oliver, you also get:

  • less maintenance and fewer things to worry about
