When choosing plants for your Oliver, you have two options.
1. Ready-made plant sets
If you'd rather not overthink it (a perfectly reasonable choice), simply pick one of our curated sets.
We've designed them so that:
- the plants grow at a similar pace
- their sizes are compatible
- they don't compete for space or shade each other
And, of course, they also make sense in the kitchen.
Our collections include, for example:
- herbs for Italian cooking
- Mexican-inspired combinations
- cocktail herbs
They work well together—in your planter and on your plate.
2. Create your own mix
Want to build your own combination? Go for it.
One Oliver can hold up to 6 plants. Just keep a few things in mind:
- check the expected size of each plant (listed with every capsule)
- combine plants with a similar growth rate
Because plants need personal space too. Some stay as modest as Harry Potter in the cupboard under the stairs. Others quickly decide that the whole Oliver belongs to them.
Understanding plant sizes
Size S
These plants stay nice and compact.
You can plant them anywhere and combine them with S, M, L or XXL plants.
Size M
Still relatively compact, with very little shading of neighbouring plants.
Pairs well with S, M and L plants.
Size L
Now we're talking.
These plants start claiming a bit more territory. They spread over neighbouring positions and may shade smaller plants.
For the best results, combine them mainly with Size S plants.
Size XXL
This isn't just a plant.
It's the main character.
XXL plants naturally spread over neighbouring positions and need at least half of the Oliver to themselves for the best harvest.
We recommend placing them near the edges of the planter, where they have plenty of room to grow without starting diplomatic disputes with their neighbours.
Let Olí handle the layout
When setting up your Oliver, the Olí app will:
- recommend the ideal plant layout
- make sure your plants have enough space
- optimise every growing position inside your Oliver
You choose the plants. The system fine-tunes the rest.
